WEEK TWO : Making It Work

Drawing by Jim Leggitt

Continue to develop your most successful sketch model into a more refined physical model. Once you've achieved a form you are pleased with, photograph your model from a number of angles (see handout for tips), print these photos and use trace paper to further detail your kiosk, addressing the programmatic requirements as revealed in your narrative exploration and case study findings.

For Tuesday you should have a series of perspective drawings (at least 4) created through this process, which will allow us to see your design in detail. We will meet as a group to review at 9:30 am.

WEEK THREE:
T 1/31 : Square Table Review | Introduce Part One Deliverables
TH 2/2 : Desk Crits | Workday

WEEK FOUR:
T 2/7 : Desk Crits | Workday
TH 2/9 : Part One Due | Introduce Part Two Deliverables

WEEK FIVE:
T 2/14 : Workday
TH 2/16 : Part Two Due for Installation in Lobby

WEEK TWO : Thinking It Through

Now that you've spent some time getting familiar with your concept and exploring it at a macro level, let's return to human scale and the shopping experience.  For the next phase of your process, spend 45 minutes writing a detailed narrative on your blog visualizing your experience as 1) a customer---approaching, exploring and making a purchase at your kiosk and 2) the daily routine of the shop attendant, from opening the kiosk in the morning to closing at night.

Once you complete your narrative, spend an additional 15 minutes distilling what you've learned from this exploration into a bulleted list of programmatic considerations to guide you moving forward.

WEEK TWO : Immaculate CONCEPTion

4.0 MOOD BOARD WIP | CREATIVELY DRIVEN

FOR THURSDAY, JANUARY 26:

3 SKETCH MODELS
Using the materials of your choosing, develop a minimum of three kiosk sketch models that communicate your concept at a macro level.   For this assignment, think like a sculptor (or a student in 1st year)---sitting the functionality requirements aside for a bit---to play with form.

INSPIRATION PHOTO HUNT

Where does your concept currently stand?  How have your ideas morphed from the words you pulled at random last week?  Curate a gallery of at least 10 images on your blog that showcase the ideas in your head.  What could you show a client to get them on board conceptually?  Along with the images, include a brief statement that defines your concept and ties everything together.

WEEK ONE : Instamatic Schematic

In an effort to update the shopping center's image and redirect its appeal to a new market of consumers, the owner of Seasons Greetings Town Centre has hired our firm, Revisiting Retail, to evaluate the possibility of exchanging several of the shopping center's less-successful chain stores for high-end specialty boutiques.  As a way of dipping their toes in the water, the Centre would like to begin the process by testing a series of mini, self-contained pop-up shops in it's light-filled atrium.

Building on what you learned in your case study investigation, as well as this morning's display ideation, you are charged with designing a tiny store-front that fits within an 8'x10' footprint.  Along with your given product, the Centre's owners have also provided three unique concepts to direct your exploration.

Over the weekend create 3 mock-ups of each of 3 concept-driven designs, for a total of 9 drawings.  Pay special attention to materials and color in this exploration.  You will be able to use the computer to aid in future design explorations, but for now, limit yourself to hand-media...as the generation of ideas is key.  In each drawing be sure to include a scale figure and any annotations that will help clarify your idea.

Due Tuesday at 8:30 am.

WEEK ONE : Kiosk Case Study

Canary Wharf Kiosk | Make Architects

Throughout the semester you will embark on a number of case study investigations. The purpose of these exercises is to heighten your observation of details in the retail environment, thereby increasing your body of knowledge for future projects. For each case study you must write a succinct 500-word analysis. The analysis should be complimented by a series of quality annotated/captioned sketches and photographs (if allowed by the store : be sure to ask permission) that expand upon your written investigation. Each case study is to be presented on your blog with appropriate links and citations prior to the beginning of class on its due date.

Your first case study assignment, due Thursday, January 19, is to analyze retail kiosks.  What components are necessary to make a sale?  How do customers and retailers interact?  Look at a minimum of 5 specific kiosks.  Do the materials reflect the store’s brand? Are the surfaces smooth? Textured? Rough? Reflective?  Does lighting play a significant role?  What flexibility, if any, does the structure provide? Be careful in your selection of kiosks to choose ones with interesting qualities/features as these will be the most helpful to your design development. You can choose to study ones found in a variety of locations (malls, downtowns, retail parks, etc.) as well as those in books, magazines and online.
